(31/05/23)  Vietnam Airlines completed the long-haul flight VN37 from Hanoi to Frankfurt (Germany) as part of SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge, aiming to encourage global airlines to find innovative ways to make air travel greener.

On the special flight, the national carrier implemented several environmental protection activities including giving passengers bags made from unusable life vests, serving sustainably sourced meals and encouraged passengers to use their personal items instead of single-use disposables provided onboard.

From unusable vests that no longer meet safety requirements, Vietnam Airlines joined hands with social enterprise Limloop to recycle hundreds of life vests into handbags for passengers.

Moreover, Vietnam Airlines also served a sustainable inflight meal using seasonal ingredients and alternative plant-based protein source from sustainably grown soybeans through partnership with the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC).

The meal selection included a range of Vietnamese delicacies namely soy panna cotta with coconut milk, minced meat patties with green rice flakes – a specialty from Vong Village and Vietnamese bread with grilled soy spring roll.

The airline is also working with VietHarvest to supply excess food from its kitchen to the enterprises to ensure that quality food is provided to people in need.

“Enhancing our sustainability efforts by introducing new solutions to reduce environmental impact is one of many meaningful activities that we are working on and we believe this can make a positive impact on our society and inspire airlines worldwide to change,” said Dang Anh Tuan – Head of Corporate Communications, Vietnam Airlines. “Vietnam Airlines is determined to reinforce our commitment to environmental goals, including net zero emissions by 2050.”

Launched in 2022, The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC) is an initiative created to affect meaningful change in the short-term.

All participating airlines commit to sharing their innovations and insights industry-wide after the challenge to help reduce aviation’s environmental impact while the industry waits for greater availability of alternative fuel sources.

This year’s challenge took part from 15 to 28 May with 22 airlines participating. In total, 72 flights were planned, split into 24 short-haul flights, 24 medium-haul flights and 24 long-haul flights.
