Funny-man James Corden has been involved in some of showbiz’s biggest beefs over the years.

This week, the Gavin and Stacey star, 45, was seen in a tense exchange with British Airways staff after a ‘nightmare’ flight from Portugal. Thanks to James’ infamous clash with restaurant staff back in 2022, when the Fat Friends alum’s behaviour earned him a ban from New York eatery, Balthazar, many thought the actor was ruffling feathers again.

But James’ fellow BA passengers quickly shut down any accusations of diva demands from the dad-of-three and praised the former The Late Late Show host for sticking up for his travel buddies and keeping the mood as light as possible.

However, James hasn’t always been credited for his conduct. From his on-stage mud-slinging with Patrick Stewart to his red-faced restaurant row in New York, the fur has flown…

Restaurant row

James hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2022 after a New York restauranteur claimed he’d banned him from his eatery after the TV host allegedly “yelled like crazy” at a waiter.

Balthazar chain owner Keith McNally, 73, hit out at the Gavin and Stacey star, on Instagram, claiming a waiter was “left shaken” by the apparent outburst.

According to Mr McNally, James said he’d found traces of egg white in an egg yolk omelette and told the server, “You can’t do your job! You can’t do your job! Maybe I should go into the kitchen and cook the omelette myself!”

After the story broke, Mr McNally stood down, claiming that James had been in touch and offered a grovelling apology. Taking to Instagram, he wrote: “James Corden just called me and apologised profusely. Having f****d up myself more than most people, I strongly believe in second chances.

“But… anyone magnanimous enough to apologise to a deadbeat layabout like me (and my staff) doesn’t deserve to be banned from anyway. Especially Balthazar. So come back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Corden, Jimmy Corden. All is Forgiven.”

However, this wasn’t the end of the story. After James gave a half-hearted apology on the Late Late Show followed by a controversial interview in The Times about the incident, McNally posted on Instagram: “I don’t want to over-egg the pudding, but in Friday’s London Times Corden flip-flopped and told a massive lie AGAIN: ‘I never screamed at anyone, I didn’t shout, didn’t call anyone a name or swear or use derogatory language… How is it remotely a thing? When that person who posted the story wasn’t even there. On second viewing, I found his TV ‘confessional’ contrived and phoney. The actor will say anything to save his bacon.”

Mud slinging with Patrick Stewart

James and Sir Patrick shocked guests at an awards ceremony when the pair got involved in a jaw-dropping verbal tussle. James was hosting the Glamour Women of the Year event in front of an audience of celebrated stars, including Cheryl, Billie Piper, Christine Bleakley and Lily Allen when the spat took place.

The drama unfolded when seasoned Star Trek actor Sir Patrick got up on stage to present a gong for Film Actress of the Year and criticised James for his hosting techniques.

He told the actor not to stand at the back with his hands in his pocket looking like he would ‘rather be somewhere else’ when recipients went to collect their gongs.

The feedback fell flat with James, and things got worse when Sir Patrick told the comic: “From where I was sitting, I could see your belly.” James snapped back: “Sorry, I’m waiting for the punchline. You could see my belly… Well I can see you dying [on stage] right now.”

Furious bust-up with cyclist

James found himself in a furious bust-up with a cyclist in London in 2022 after the TV star was thrown from his bike.

The multi-millionaire was reportedly ‘sent flying’ from his rented Santander bike during the country’s unprecedented heatwave while cycling down London’s Regent Street alongside his wife Julia. The TV star ‘narrowly missed traffic’ after he was forced to swerve a man, who cut across his path.

After the incident, James was papped looking funing as he picked up his rented bike from the ground and signalled furiously at the cyclist who had collided with him.

The History Boys star appeared really riled as his wife seemed concerned about his welfare while standing alongside him after the altercation.

James is said to have confronted the other cyclist and was reportedly heard swearing at him following the near crash. One onlooker told The Sun: “Corden was fuming. This young cyclist just darted across the road and sent him flying. It must have really taken him by surprise. He had no cuts or bruises but it must have hurt. He ticked off the cyclist who said ‘sorry’.”

Ricky Gervais dig

Ricky and James have a lot of similarities – but they certainly don’t get on. The pair would could have been good pals, considering they are both British comedians who wrote iconic TV shows then found success in America.

However, they became well known for trading withering insults – with the first swipe taking place in James’ short-lived comedy show Horne and Corden.

During one sketch in their BBC 3 series back in 2009, James depicted Ricky as a bumbling fool, who was struggling to find any work. He poked fun at The Office’s David Brent character in a scene in the trenches during World War I, and in another he mocked his famous dance.

Mathew Horne, who created the show with James – who he later fell out with – revealed he had he had to pull James up for acting too much like Ricky during an episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

James and Ricky then became almost direct rivals as they were both on hosting duties at major awards shows. Ricky offended basically the whole of Hollywood when he fronted the Golden Globes in 2011, but James gushed there wouldn’t be as many bad-taste jokes when he hosted the Brit Awards that year

However, there was clearly tension between the pair when Ricky started to criticise James for some of his jokes, including an ill-timed one he made about Harvey Weinstein.

“It’s a beautiful night here in L.A,” James said at the annual amfAR charity dinner in Hollywood in 2017, at the height of the #MeToo scandal emerging. “So beautiful, Harvey Weinstein has already asked tonight up to his hotel to give him a massage.”

Ricky is known for his close-to-the-bone gags, but he had something to say about James’ tasteless joke during an interview on Radio Andy. “When you do a contentious joke or talk about a taboo subject, it’s got to be a great joke,” he said.

“You can’t just bounce out there and do jokes about abuse and rape. You’ve got to be very intelligent when you do it. There’s got to be a point to it. He did it like it was light entertainment. He didn’t do it well enough.”
